How to Use the GAPS Diet
This section of our GAPS diet review will cover each phase and its stages. We will describe each stage briefly.
Phase One: Elimination
The length of this phase can vary from a few weeks to a full year.
You will eat homemade broth and probiotic foods during this stage. Mint tea or chamomile with a little honey are the drinks you should pair with your meals.
You can add raw eggs, stews, and fish to your diet during this stage.
Keep eating the foods in the previous stages and add some fermented vegetables or pancakes that use duck or goose fat.

GAPS Diet Planning Tips
Your success with the GAPS diet will depend on how accurately you follow the recommendations in it. It is especially important to cook and eat only the foods that GAPS experts recommend and avoid all others until the third phase. Some of our tips on the list below may help you.
- Foods to Try. During the maintenance phase of the diet, you should try to restrict yourself to meals that incorporate only fresh meats, animal fats, fish, shellfish, fermented foods, eggs, and vegetables.
- Things to Avoid. You shouldn’t combine meat and fruit in the same meal. Try to use organic ingredients as much as you can. Supplement each meal with animal fat, coconut oil, or olive oil. You should eat large quantities of fermented foods and avoid foods in packages and cans. Remember to avoid all foods that are not on the GAPS diet recipe lists.
- Reintroducing Foods. Remember that reintroducing various food groups to your diet can be a long process. Most experts recommend only coming off of the GAPS diet after you’ve experienced normal digestion for at least six months. You should introduce new foods slowly and wait two or three days before moving on to additional food groups. Even after you come off the diet completely, we recommend avoiding foods that are highly processed.
